CD and DVD Burning - Archiving data
Introduction
With a copuple of exceptions the Observers area workstations are dual boot systems running Windows XP and Debian Linux. In addition to the usual astronomical applications available for observers, these machines are capable of burning CDs and DVDs in both operating systems. Basic instructions are provided here for the Debian Linux operating system.
Any ATNF user can login to access the CD/DVD burning application called k3b. The full path of the application is /usr/bin/k3b.
Any problems, comments and recommendations for improvement can be directed to , Brett Lennon@csiro.au.
Click on a task below for further information:
Copying CDs
- Log in with your ATNF unix account
- Launch the application k3b from a console or shell. The full path is /usr/bin/k3b
- In each of the figures below, click to enlarge onto a separate browser window
- Select Copy CD in the lower panel (figure 1)
- A CD copy panel is launched as shown in the (figure 2). The defaults are usually sufficient for most cases.
- Ensure that there is sufficient disk space for the application to create an image in the Temp Directory. CDs usually require at least 650 to 700Mb of free disk space whereas DVDs required 4.7 Gb or twice that depending on the density and number of layers on the DVD.
- A typical screen is shown in figure 3 and figure 4 indicating the progress of the copying process.
- The process is complete once the message "Writing successfully finished" is displayed in the scrollable message window
- Double check that the disk write operation was successful by attempting to read files off the newly created CD.

- Drag and Drop files from the folder panel and/or file panel into the project panel
- The project panel displays the files and folders that are to be burnt onto the CD
- A disk usage bar is displayed at the bottom of the project panel. Ensure that the used disk space doesn't exceed the CD limit (~ 650 to 700 Mb)
- Click on the Burn button located in the bottom right corner of the panel once you are ready to proceed.
- A Writing Data CD panel is displayed (figure 7) indicating the progress of the burning process.

- Note that the limit is 4.7 or 9.4 Gb (instead of 650 to 700 Mb) depending on the DVD
Mastering DVDs
- The process is identical to the CD mastering process with the exception that you select New Data DVD Project (figure 1) instead of New Data CD Project
- Note that the limit is 4.7 or 9.4 Gb (instead of 650 to 700 Mb) depending on the DVD
