VMS Computers

This chapter is not intended to instruct users in the intricaces of VMS. VMS Help is available from within DCL. Unlike some of its equivalents, it is quite helpful, and often a good place to start.

There are 6 Vaxes and an Alpha using VMS at Narrabri. The VAXes are all clustered together in order to share resources (eg printer queues). The visitor will generally be interested in ATRIA, NOEL, DESK2 and LEON. ATRIA and NOEL are the online observing computers and information about using these machines is in the observer's manual ( Australia Telescope Compact Array User's Guide ).

LEON is the general user machine. Visitors will most often use LEON for creating observing schedules and running ASSISTANCE (monitoring the observing when outside the control room).

DESK2 is a VAX station which sits on the desk in the control room. It is used to access the archiving station, for display of compact array status, and for general computer access.

ACCESS

User accounts are created for visitors before they arrive here. Passwords are available from members of the operations group or the duty astronomer. Ensure that you change your password to something obscure.

Logging In

Printing

There are a number of laser quality printers connected to the network, located in most buildings on site. Each of these printers has a number of 'queues' associated with it to format the output.

Mail

There are a number of mailers available from LEON, including:

There is some confusion created by the fact that all forwarding is defined ATNF wide, and whenever accounts are created at Narrabri, a database at Marsfield has to be updated. The default forwarding is that accounts that have no equivalent at Marsfield are redirected to Narrabri, and accounts that do have equivalents there are left as is.
