The Australia Telescope National Facility

The ATNF is managed as a National Facility by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). Formerly part of the CSIRO Division of Radiophysics, it became a separate division in January 1989. The ATNF became a National Facility in April 1990. As a National Facility, the Australia Telescope provides world-class observing facilities for astronomers at Australian and overseas institutions.

The ATNF employs about 140 staff, including about 40 astronomers. The ATNF has strong links with Australian Universities, the Anglo-Australian Observatory (which operates a 3.9m optical telescope and which shares its headquarters with the ATNF's Sydney site), and with many overseas institutions, including the USA's National Radio Astronomy Observatory.

A triannual newsletter is produced by the ATNF which includes recent news items, scientific articles and time assignment information.

Email addresses of ATNF staff consist of their first name and family name separated by a period, in front of the string @csiro.au. For example Karl.Jansky@csiro.au. Some ATNF-specific email addresses use a different domain name, for example, applications for permission to observe remotely should be send to rem_obs@atnf.csiro.au.
