NT 4.0 - Workstation Setup Notes - ATNF (Narrabri) |
Installing
Windows NT 4.0 |
 |
Locate the 3 disks marked
Windows
NT 4.0 Workstation Setup Disk (Full Install) and the installation CD
with the serial number marked on the back cover.
-
Reboot the PC with the disk
marked Windows NT 4.0 Workstation Boot (Setup) disk 1/3 (Full Install)
-
In the Windows NT Workstation
Setup screen press ENTER to install Windows NT.
-
Press ENTER to detect mass storage
devices.
-
In most cases, PCs with IDE
hard disks and CD-ROMs should produce the following message:
Found: IDE CD-ROM (ATAPI 1.2)/PCI IDE Controller
-
Choose to install a New installation
-
Select a partition to install
windows. The following is an example of the information display when selecting
a partition

Press ENTER to install. Formatting
the partition (NTFS) is optional (but desirable) depending on whether a
complete reinstall is required to resolve problems of corrupted system
files.

Enter the location of the install
directory (eg. \WINNT). Ensure that the installation
CD is ready.
-
Once all the system files have
been copied remove any floppy and CDs and reboot.
-
Place the CD in the CD-ROM drive
and click OK to continue with the Windows NT Setup step
-
Select Custom inthe Setup Options.
-
Enter the name of the user (or
PC if many users are to access the workstation) and the name of the organisation.
-
Enter the OEM Product ID key
(see back of installation CD cover)
-
Enter the name of the PC
-
Enter the local administrator
password.
-
Do not create Emergency Repair
Disk until all the standard applications have been installed.
-
Select all the options for the
following components
-
Accessibility Options
-
Accessories
-
Communications
-
Multimedia
-
Select This computer will
participate on a network / Wired to the network
-
Click Start Search (to
locate the network adapter). If unsuccessful you will need to click the
Select
from list .... button and then have disk. You will be required to insert
the manufacturers (driver) disk at this point.
-
Select the TCP/IP protocol.
-
Do not use DHCP unless an entry
has been added on kaputar.
-
Once the appropriate files have
been copied you will be prompted with the following
-
IP address: one should have
been already allocated via Epping helpdesk
You can check via the unix
command nslookup hostname
-
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
-
Default Gateway: 192.207.156.5
-
DNS
-
domain name: atnf.csiro.au
-
DNS Service search order: 192.207.156.41,
192.207.156.181
-
Domain Suffix Search Order:
atnf.csiro.au, rp.csiro.au, tip.csiro.au
-
WINS Address:
-
Primary WINS Server: 130.155.198.129

Secondary WINS Server: 130.155.101.102
-
Enable DNS for Windows Resolution
-
Enable LMHOSTS Lookup
-
The following list of bindings
should be displayed: NetBIOS Interface, Server, Workstation

Select the Domain field and
enter CULGOORA
-
Tick the box Create a Computer
Account in the Domain
-
Enter a User Name (administrator
or any account with administrator privilages) and password
-
Select the Time Zone
-
Display Settings: Use the low
resolution if NT cannot detect the video card.
-
Test the video settings and
correctly answer the question: Did you see the test bitmap properly ?
-
Restart the PC

Map the following network drive
using Windows Explorer

Drive Letter H:

Execute the file H:\NT
Service Packs\sp6i386
-
Files will be copied to the
hard disk before the installation begins.

Reboot the PC once the installation
is complete.
Drive
Letter Assignments |

This step is required in
order to change the CD-ROM drive letter assignement to K. Not a
necessary step but it is desirable to allocate E: to I: for mapping network
drives.
Go to Start/Programs/Administrative
Tools (Common)/Disk Administrator
Click OK to the message indicating
that the
System configuration will now be updated.
Select the CD-ROM drive (by
clicking on the box representing the CD-ROM)
Right mouse click and go to
Assign Drive Letter
Use the drop down menu to select
K:
in the Assign Drive Letter option
Click OK and Yes to submit the
change.
Microsoft
Office 97 |
 |
Microsoft Office 97 is a
standard Windows package which includes Word, Excel and Powerpoint. Workstations
are configured to run Office 97 from the local hard disk. The installation
procedure is as follows:
Log in as administrator (or
a account with administrator privilages).
Ensure that the H: drive
is mapped as \\ningadhun\pcapps
Execute the file H:\MSOffice97\MSOffice97\Setup.exe
Enter the Name and Organisation
details
Enter the 11-digit CD Key (see
administrator for details)
Select Custom Install
Click on Select All and
then unselect
Microsoft Access and Microsoft Outlook (giving
a total size of 121Mb)
Once the installation is complete
perform the following customisation (which will disable the autostartup
office tool bar from launching every time a user logs in):

Right mouse click on Start and
select Open All Users
-
Go to Programs / Startup
-
Select all the shortcuts (Microsoft
Find Fast, Microsoft Office Shortcut, Office Setup) and press the delete
key.
-
Delete the Setup for Microsoft
Internet Explorer 3.01 shortcut on the desktop.
Netscape
Communicator 4.x |

Netscape Communicator is
a web browser with email, composer and newsgroup components.
Installation Procedure
-
Ensure that the H: drive
is mapped as \\ningadhun\pcapps
-
Execute the file H:\Netscape\Communicator\cc32d475.exe
(the
current version is 4.75)
-
Select
a Custom Install (with default destination directory: C:\Program
Files\Netscape\Communicator)
-
Unselect
the component
Real Player 7 Basic
-
Untick
the following:
Make Netscape Netcenter my home page, Use Netscape Netcenter
to search the Web
-
Re-boot
the PC
User
Configuration
-
Upon rebooting from the installation
procedure above delete the following shortcuts on the desktop
-
Free AOL & Unlimited Internet
-
AOL Instant Messenger (TM)
-
Go to Start / Programs / Netscape
Communicator / Utilities / User Profile Manager
-
Click New and enter the Full
Name and email address
-
Enter the profile name (this
will be display in the list of users that can use Communicator on the workstation)
-
Ensure that the E: drive
is mapped as \\ningadhun\users
-
Click New and enter the Full
Name and email address
-
Enter the location of user settings,
preferences, bookmarks, etc..
e.g. E:\Computing_Group\username\apps\Netscape\Communicator\Program
-
If the user already has files
in this directory click Yes to use the existing profile data.
-
If the user is using Netscape
for the first time then perform the following manual configuration
-
Launch Netscape Navigator via
the desktop shortcut or from
Start / Programs / Netscape
Communicator / Netscape Navigator
-
Go to Edit / Preferences
-
Enter the location of the home
page to http://wwwnar.atnf.csiro.au
-
In Mail & Newsgroups / Mail
Servers set the following:
-
Incoming Mail Servers: mailhost-nar,
Server Type: POP3
-
Outgoing Mail Server: mailhost-nar
-
Outgoing mail server username:
UNIX or NIS username
-
Test the configuration by launching
Netscape Communicator and check that the correct home page is loaded at
startup.
McAfee
Virus Scanner |
 |
McAfee Virus Scanner is essential
to protect the workstation from viruses. Once installed it runs in the
background so that no user intervention is required.
-
Ensure that the H: drive
is mapped as \\ningadhun\pcapps
-
Execute the file H:\McAfee
Virus Scanner\WinNT4_v403\setup.exe
-
Select the Typical installation
option
-
The default destination directory
is C:\Program Files\Network Associates\VirusScan
NT
-
Use the SYSTEM account to install
the application
-
Reboot the PC once the installation
has been completed
-
Upon rebooting the PC execute
the file H:\McAfee Virus Scanner\4103xdat
-
Right mouse click on the Virus
Scan Shield and select the Console option
-
Right mouse click on the Automatic
DAT Update task and go to Properties
-
In the Update Options window
click on the Schedule button.
-
Click on Enable scheduler and
set the update to run Weekly. The time should be some time in the early
hours of the morning when little network traffic is expected. Select a
day of the week that the workstation is most likely to be switched on.
Click OK
-
If an update is required before
the automatic scheduled time, click on the green play graphic to begin
the update procedure.
-
Check the date of the DAT file
by going to Help / About
Acrobat
Reader 4.0 |

Acrobat Reader is a application
which reads PDF files (Portable Document Files).
Execute the file: H:\Adobe\acrobat4\Ar40eng
Use the recommended default
destination folder
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat
4.0 for the installation
Select Yes to restart
the PC

Tardis |

NT Tardis is a time synchronisation
service that synchronises the PC clock to a time server.
Execute the file: H:\NTTardis\install
This step is required in order
to change the CD-ROM drive letter assignement to K. Not a necessary step
but it is desirable to
The executable copies the following
files to the \WINNT\system32 directory
Tardis.cpl, Tardis.gid,
Tardis.hlp, Tardis.wri and Tardserv.exe
as well starting the Tardis
time service
Go to the Control Panel / Services
Select the Tardis time service
and click the Startup button
Set the Startup Type option
to Automatic (this will set the time service to startup automatically every
time the PC boots up).
Click the Start button to ensure
that the time service can successfully start up.
Go to Control Panel / Tardis
Enter ningadhun as the
time server
Enter 360 Mins for the synchronise
interval (although a smaller setting can be optionally set)
WinZip |

WinZip is a popular compression
application.
Execute the file: H:\CompressionProgs\WinZip\winzip95
Click the Setup button
Use the default directory C:\Program
Files\WinZip for the installation
Select Start with WinZip Classic
Select the Express setup option
Click Finish
Tweak

Right click on the file: H:\tweakui\Tweakui.inf
Depending
of the Explorer settings the .inf extension will not be displayed. The
name of the file will be displayed as Tweakui with Setup Information as
the file type

Select Install
