SETI PROJECT PHOENIX CALL-OUT PROCEDURES FOR MOPRA/NARRABRI ATNF
Go to the Table of Contents
The monitoring and control of Mopra is achieved by two semi-permanent ISDN
links.
- MAPS (Mopra Antenna Protection System - old PMon
replacement) - between Mopra and Narrabri (fire, security, antenna
safety, etc).
- WAN (Ethernet circuit) - linking Mopra and Narrabri,
via Parkes and Epping (eg. CAMON and SETIVIEW etc).
MAPS ALARMS
The MAPS alarm comprises both the local Mopra alarm and the remote Narrabri
autodialler and fire panel.
Autodial Alarm
- A MAPS alarm will autodial a set list until a response is made.
- The responding party will enter a 5 digit code number, which will halt
the auto dialler. The responding party must then deal with the alarm.
- The list sequence is as follows:
- John Whiteoak - (home no) - this number is
dialled as an information alert only and usually no response is made;
- Mobile telephone - will be located with the
Rostered On-call staff member. During normal working hours the
mobile telephone won't respond. Between 4.00pm and arriving home
and likewise in the morning coming to work, the mobile telephone
should be activated and in standby mode;
- 4031 - Dedicated Extension No.
Business Hours - 8.00am - 4.00pm - diverted to
Narrabri switchboard;
After Hours - 4.00pm - 8.00am - diverted to
On-call staff member's home phone no.;
- Graham Baines - (home no);
- Ron Beresford - (home no);
- Antenna Lab .
- (Dave McConnell may be added to the list at a later date.)
SETI INITIATED CALL-OUT
Calls From Individuals
- A SETI On-call roster will be produced each Friday for distribution to:
SETI at Parkes (Bud Hill); Mopra; Rostered On-call and other relevant
staff members; John Brooks at Epping; and the noticeboard in the Narrabri
Control Room
- The roster will include On-call staff and alternate numbers. The SETI
person making the call will be instructed to use the following hierarchy
in seeking assistance:
- Business Hours (8am-4pm) - Ext 4000 - Narrabri
switchboard;
- After Hours (4pm -8am)
- Ext 4031 - This will be diverted to the
Rostered On-call staff member's home no.;
- Rostered On-call staff member - (home no);
- Mobile Telephone - which will be with the
Rostered On-call staff member;
- John Whiteoak - (home no);
- Graham Baines - (home no);
- Ron Beresford - (home no);
- On-Call Pager .
- (Dave McConnell may be added to the list at a later date.)
TYPES OF CALLS & HOW TO RESPOND
- A list of additional support staff will be produced monthly for use by
the Rostered On-call staff members. The master copy will be held in
the Narrabri Control Room and all changes whould be noted there.
Available staff may be called on to travel to Mopra and rectify a fault
within four hours of the alert (a car, fitted with an additional mobile
telephone, will be on standby with the Rostered On-call staff member for
this purpose).
MAPS Autodial Calls
- The MAPS alarm will annunciate at both Mopra and Narrabri. An alarm will
sound at Mopra and the autodialler will be activated at Narrabri.
Detailed MAPS information is available through the CAMON pages.
- In all cases, assess the problem, take action according to the situation
and if the telescope will be put out of action for any length of time,
call SETI at Parkes to inform them of the problem.
- The recorded messages and responses are as follows.
- Message: The Mopra-Narrabri MAPS link has
failed.
Responses
- Check the CAMON pages to determine the link status and confirm
the presence of the WAN/Ethernet circuit.
- MAPS Link (Narrabri/Mopra) - contact appropriate support staff
member.
- Message: The Mopra Cryogenics have failed.
Responses
- Check the CAMON pages and contact an available staff member
who deals with cryogenics.
- Message: The Mopra Summary Alarm has been
activated.
Responses
- Check the CAMON pages for a diagnosis and contact the relevant
staff member from the Staff Availability list. Problems may
include:
antenna safety, eg antenna unstowed; power failure; weather;
security; air conditioning.
- Message: The Mopra Fire Alarm has been activated
Responses
- If a fire alert occurs on the MAPS system an alert originating
from the sensors at Mopra will ring at the Sidings Springs Fire
Brigade. From there, the fire brigade's autodial system will
call out the firefighting team.
- Try to ring Mopra to see if anyone (eg, the fire brigade)
is in attendance.
- Call Robina Otrupcek at her home (068 422-615) and advise
her of the alarm.
- Try to log in to Mopra to see if the system has gone down, or
access the control room at Narrabri to see if there are images
on the Mopra monitor.
SETI Initiated Calls
- These calls may be for any problems experienced by the SETI staff
with respect to Mopra.
Responses
- Assess the problem through speaking with the caller, check the
CAMON pages to assist with the diagnosis, then contact the
relevant available staff member from the Staff Availability List.
- If receiving a call on the pager call Narrabri to identify the
source (Nbri/Mopra). If the call did not originate at Narrabri
contact SETI at Parkes, check the CAMON pages and/or ask the
Narrabri Control Room to assist with the diagnosis
(MAPS alarms?).
SOFTWARE, LOG IN PROCEDURES AND MONITOR PAGES
Software
A guide to Phoenix software
is available.
- SETIVIEW
- is a diagnostic tool that can be used to view the traffic through
SETIOBS and SETIMON (the SETI interface processes).
Remote Log In Procedures
- There are two alternatives to view the Mopra CAMON pages.
- Log in as CAMON
This only allows access to the CAMON pages.
- Log in to MOPRA:: as CAMON (no password is required). Exiting
CAMON will log you out.
- Log in to MOPRA:: as yourself and run CAMON as usual.
- There are also two alternatives to run SETIVIEW from Mopra.
- Log in as SETIVIEW
This will only run the SETIVIEW program.
- Log in to MOPRA:: as SETIVIEW.
Exiting will also log you out.
- Log in to MOPRA:: as yourself and run SETIVIEW
with the command
$ setiview
CAMON Pages
SETI CAMON pages include:
- /SETI

and time of return to service of the Mopra System.
- It's the On-call staff member's responsibility (for their particular day)
to check the Control Room / master copy of the Staff Availability List
and confirm which staff may be called upon for the day.
