Computer Resources at the Narrabri Observatory
The Observer's Area is equipped with a number of
Sun workstations and PCs
for use by the DA and visiting observers. On arrival at the control building,
help yourself to a desk and spare workstation in the Observer's Area.
Accounts are created for visitors who request them in their booking.
Almost all astronomers need an account, so it is important that you
request this in the last page of the
ATNF Reservation Form.
Please copy all important files and clear your disk space before you
leave, as file systems are purged regularly. (Small files last longer
than large files.)
You should also keep a copy of your schedule files (read by CAOBS during
observing); as these are deleted occasionally from where their location
in the $ATCA_SCHED directory of the atcaobs account on XBONES.
For information about the Observatory computer facilities, see the
collection of web pages
.
Personal laptops can be connected to the network via DHCP. If you require
a laptop connection to the network, please check that box when filling
out the www-based ATNF Reservation Form. For information describing
how to connect your laptop to the network, see the
ATNF Computing Web pages.
For reading data, CDROM drives are available on most machines, while
exabyte and DAT drives are connected to the machine HYDRUS.
For writing data (apart from your raw observations which are written
from FURIOUS), there is a CDROM writer on most of the observer's computers.
You can also write data using the exabyte and DAT drives on
HYDRUS, however it is advisable to bring your own tapes,
or check the Observatory supplies before arriving, in which case
email:
Robin Wark Robin.Wark@csiro.auor Brett Lennon
Brett.Lennon@csiro.au.
For more information cd-writing and the using the tape drives, see:
the Narrabri computing page
.
