Galactic Plane Hydrogen Gas

Hydrogen emission along the plane of the Milky Way taken from the entire Southern Galactic Plane Survey longitude range. These data were obtained with the Parkes Radio Telescope and the Australia Telescope Compact Array. The image shows hydrogen as a function of Galactic longitude and radial (Doppler) velocity. Positive velocities correspond to gas outside the solar circle, whereas negative velocities show gas in the inner Galaxy. In this false color image black represents very strong emission.
